Historical Sites
Tumut has some fascinating historical sites. Dorothy & Tony Clee of Russellee, a Tumut B&B, suggested The Pioneer Cemetery in Tumut is the burial place of Thomas Boyd of Hume and Hovell fame, The area is also famous for the legacy of the goldrush days of the 1800's where you can discover pioneer-era huts, in nearby Adelong offering some of the best preserved ruins of former goldworkings, The Montreal community Theatre is one of the few surviving 1920’s picture theatres. Regular theatre and musical events are staged throughout the year, Tumut Historical Society Museum has information about farm and domestic items charting the town’s pioneering history, Kiandra is the birthplace of skiing in Australia with a rich gold mining past. Take a walk along the Heritage trail steeped in history with the Kiandra Pioneer Cemetery, Pioneer Huts etc, Cabramurra – Australia’s highest town (1488m ASL) The original town was constructed to house scheme workers and their families during the 1950’s and 60’s and Currango Homestead built in late 1895 offers unique accommodation where you can experience what life in the high country was like.

Main Tourist Attractions
There are some main tourist attractions in Tumut that you should not miss. Dorothy & Tony Clee suggested Apples, and stone fruit can be purchased from fruit stalls and orchards when in season, Mt. Selwyn provides breathtaking winter scenery and some of the best ski runs Mother Nature has, Tumut 3 Power Station is Australia’s largest hydro power station. View the massive pipelines, the impressive Talbingo Dam and Jounama Pondage, plus you can take a guided tour of the facility, Yarrangobilly Caves are some of the most beautiful and ornate caves in Australia. Take a guided or self guided cave tour, then take a swim in the naturally heated thermal pool, Blowering Dam is where Ken Warby set the world water speed record. Here you can go water skiing, windsurfing and it is a great spot fishing enthusiasts with rainbow trout, brown trout, golden perch and Kosciusko National Park is 690,000 hectares of diverse natural landscape. Bushwalking, mountain bike riding, picnicking, fishing, caving, car touring, canoeing, and horse riding.

Trails/Wildlife/Nature
If you like nature and want to see the wildlife, there are some places to go. Dorothy & Tony Clee suggested Visit the magnificent Buddong Falls, Yarrangobilly Caves in Kosiuszko National Park, the Sugar Pine Walk and Aboretum in State Forests, See Emus and Kangaroos roaming wild in their natural habitat around Blowering Dam, The northern end of Kosciusko National Park has a large variety of walking tracks that will take you past crystal clear streams and rivers, mountain gorges, open high country plains, breathtaking bush, Scenic drives a plenty. Tourist Drive 5 Tumut, Kiandra, Cabramurra, Khancoban, Tumbarumba, Batlow and Adelong. Round trip 298kms, is just one of the many beautiful scenic drives in the region, The Hume & Hovell Walking Track follows the route taken through southern NSW by Hamilton Hume and William Hovell in 1824-25 and the Tumut region contains some of the most scenic country and Blowering Cliffs Walk approx 5km return from the Log Creek Bridge to Blowering Falls.

Sports/Adventure
For those of you into sports and adventure, there are some great things to do. We suggest Ultralight flying with Air Escape, hang gliding, mountain bike riding, Golfing – Tumut has 4 golf courses each with their own unique mountain setting. Tumut’s 18 hole golf course is challenging and will test anyone’s handicap, Skiing at Mt Selwyn ski fields, Canoeing and kayaking down the Tumut and Goobarrgandra Rivers and Fishing in the Tumut Region is widely regarded as the most picturesque and varied inland fishing areas in NSW.

Specialty Shops
Tumut has some specialty shops which are worth visiting. We suggest The Batlow Woodwork Gallery, in the old Batlow Bank, For a more unique experience visit the Adelong Taxidermy Shop or the Lolly shop in the old pharmacy building, Tumut Valley Violets set in the grounds of the 127 year old Tumut Plains school house, has over 1000 varieties of African violets, as well as fernery, hand-made pottery, ceramics and craft, The Broom Factory Tumut still producing brooms for the market today. It was established in 1946 and The Montreal Community Theatre is one of the few surviving 1920’s picture theatres, with theatre and musical events staged throughout the year.
